Sand Tray Therapy is an expressive therapeutic modality in which a sand tray, miniature figures, and sometimes water are used to create worlds or scenes that reflect a person’s inner thoughts and conflicts. This hands-on approach is often used with individuals who have experienced trauma as it is a non-threatening way to work through these emotional wounds.

In this course, participants will learn the history of Sand Tray Therapy and the origins of the approach. Participants will also gain an understanding of the use of the approach at various ages and stages of development, along with understanding various themes with the sand tray. Symbols and meanings in the archetypes are covered, along with the use of both wet and dry trays. Participants will learn the role of the therapist through an extensive experiential process which includes building in the sand. The use of Sand Tray for Individuals, Families, and Groups is also explored in this training. Participants will learn the “nuts and bolts” for the preparation to use Sand Tray in their practice, along with documentation practices.
