Using grit and determination to get through life isn’t something that’s easy. But just because it isn’t easy, it doesn’t mean it’s useless. While nature can play a role in just how much grit and determination you have, it’s not just something that you’re born with. It’s something that is influenced by your upbringing, and it’s also something that you can work on too. Grit and determination can help people to feel better while also showing them that they’re resilient and that they can achieve the things that they want.

Defining Grit and Determination

What exactly makes someone determined? And, more importantly, what is grit? Grit and determination tend to go hand in hand. People might define grit in a few different ways, but one definition from the psychologist and researched Angela Duckworth is that grit is “passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals”. When you have grit, you don’t give up on the things that you want. You set your sights on your desires and you work toward what matters to you, persisting even when things are tough.

How Grit and Determination Help People Feel Better

Grit and determination drive you. They push you to aim for success and to try and do more, whether you’re trying to get a business off the ground or you’re just trying to get through the day. People often talk about grit in relation to entrepreneurship, but you don’t have to be a business person for the concept to be useful to you.

When you have grit and determination and you use them to your advantage, it can help you to make it through tough times. You can face adversity more confidently when you are determined to make it through, giving you the drive that you need to come out on the other side. At the same time, it’s also useful for helping to put you in a more positive mental place. When you have plenty of grit and determination, it can help you to make some changes to your life to improve how you feel. While there are lots of tools to help you feel better, such as therapy, it’s ultimately up to you to commit to making changes if you want to feel better.

Being more determined and resilient can also help you to deal with negative thoughts and emotions and turn them into more adaptive ones. It gives you the desire to push through things like self-doubt or disappointment so that you can keep going and achieving. While grit and determination alone might not give you everything that you want, together they can help you take a more proactive approach to improving your mood.

Build your grit and determination to feel better about yourself and where you’re going in life.
